Lame TV Commercials

The whole idea of advertising is to create a want or need in the mind of the potential consumer.

So much so that the customer goes to their store, or online, and purchases what was offered.

One of the most effective mediums for advertising is TV.

Many companies accomplish their goals with ads that highlight special discounts or sales.

Some ads are enjoyable and others simply informative.

Others try to be convincing. (Think of the AT&T vs Verizon cell phone wars.)

Some companies, however, fall flat on their face with TV ads that are just plain lame.

A few examples come to immediately to mind:

Geico and their caveman and stack of money (with eyes, no less) ads. Not convinced with these ads that their insurance is the best. It should be mentioned, however, that their Gecko ads are cute.

The Dairy Queen red lips and white licking tounge. These ads do not make me want to run out and buy anything DQ.

Not sure what to call this one, but the Old Navy ads with that short guy and the mike. Very lame.

Though I do like the company, the Staples "Whoa. That's a low price!" ads do less than nothing.

Recently, the Snicker's Ice Cream ads are a very good reason to leave the room.

Beanos ads. Enough said.

Evidently some "marketing whiz" sold the management of these companies, and many others, on the true greatness contained in the "ads."

The TV spots were, probably, test marketed, as is generally done for large accounts that are spending millions of dollars to sell their products.

If so, these few examples missed the mark.

By miles.

Whether the ad gurus are in-house, working in the marketing department of their firms, or are hired guns from "Madison Avenue" makes no difference.

The ads are lame.

That an executive responsible for approving what gets aired to promote their goods and/or services and let these and others like them bombard the airwaves is a symptom of lack of creativity and true marketing genius.

For the sake of Main Street USA it is hoped that lame ads get yanked off the air and replaced by either better ads or dead air space.

Over For Now.
