Italian Water Garden at Longwood Gardens - Pennsylvania

There exists in Chester County, Pennsylvania (approximately 45 minutes from Philadelphia), 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows known as Longwood Gardens.

The area was first owned by William Penn who sold it in 1700 to the Peirce family. In 1906 industrialist Pierre S. du Pont purchased the expansive property in order to "save the trees," as that had been the plan, to level the area. The arboretum was the site of his family home until 1930. Prior to his death du Pont had formulated a plan for the sustained life of Longwood Gardens allowing visitors to enjoy the splendor he had created.

Of the many marvelous attractions at Longwood Gardens is the Italian Water Garden. Within the garden grow pruned littleleaf linden trees, clipped ivy, and lush green lawns that encompass six large and twelve small blue-tiled pools with a total of 600 jets of water.

Below are some images.
When near Philadelphia or Wilmington, Delaware, the Italian Water Garden - along with the 4-acre Conservatory, chiming tower, waterfalls, dancing water fountains and much much more - make a trip to Longwood Gardens a must see, must do activity.
